The astronomy facilities at the summit of Mauna Kea are considered the best in the world due to the high elevation (13,700 ft), extremely low light pollution, and 85% clear nights. In 2005, I worked at the summit for 4 nights using an infrared telescope and spent the daytime at the 9,300 ft elevation Hale Pohoku ("House of Stone"), the astronomer's lodge.
In 2007, when I returned to Mauna Kea for another observing run, I again had 4 nights on the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility.
